Graffiti Writers’ Trade. A Qualitative Analysis of the Meanings that give Sense to the Actions of Graffiti Writers and How Their Activity is Inserted in Contemporary Societies
José Luis González Rivas
I am doing research on Graffiti in the cities of Bilbao and Granada. We understand graffiti as a countercultural movement that opposes some established laws, the uses that citizens can make of public spaces and is inserted in most cities. Understood as a symptom of discomfort in contemporary societies, we aim to understand the symbology that permeates the actions of graffiti artists and graffiti artists, framed in a context of criminalization of their activity. On the other hand, several investigations show that the street is still a hostile place for women, so the gender perspective will be one of the axes of analysis of this investigation. We will also analyze the history of graffiti and urban art in the aforementioned cities because to understand social phenomena you have to know their past. All this, through a triangulation of qualitative methods: participant observation and in-depth interviews. Therefore, we will not look for invariable causes of the events that have occurred, but we will try to build, through extensive descriptions, the social processes that surround these actions.
