Atmosfera Lab Bisuala is a space for experimenting with image, sound, and ethnography. Located in the HEFA I Faculty of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (Avda. Tolosa 70, Donostia), this laboratory promotes an anthropology attentive to the material and aesthetic dimensions of the environments in which it works. It also offers workshops, seminars, and encounters that explore deeply engaged ways of bringing together art and science.
Founded in 2024, the lab continues the work initiated by the HAU-taldea group, which between 2009 and 2015 sought to create a place for documentary production within academia. Its aim is to become a hub for reflection, collaboration, and experimentation among different groups, disciplines, collectives, organizations, and institutions both inside and outside the university.
Atmosfera Lab Bisuala is part of the consolidated research group GAIT – Gizarte Aldaketa Ikerketa Taldea at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and is affiliated with the Center for Collective Identity (CEIC), located in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication (Leioa).
Its main objectives are to organize screenings, seminars, and hands-on workshops that delve into the ethical, aesthetic, and conceptual dimensions of audiovisual production; to generate materials of scientific, artistic, and social relevance; and to collaborate with intra-, inter-, and extra-university actors in promoting open knowledge, healthy environments, and emancipatory projects.
At present, it collaborates with the Basque Association of Anthropology (ANKULEGI); the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA); the Visual Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Vienna (VAAL); the Visual Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Bern (EMB); the independent film production company HIRUKI FILMAK; and the independent research space…
